EraThr3 ultra running-machine Mosi Smith has done it again. This time he ran his way to the overall victory at the 2016 Tick Tock 12-Hour Ultra Marathon in North Carolina, an event the benefits the Patriot Foundation, which was held at the Forest Creek Golf Club, an epic and lush venue outside of Pinehurst, NC.
Our man, Mosi logged 62.225 miles on the way to victory while female runner Donna Raye ran 49.125 miles for the win in the ladies class. The locally organized Nutrishop Team accumulated a total of 85.15 between its five runners. The winners all received their prize at the post-race awards ceremony but the real winner is the official charity.
The proceeds earned from entrance fees and sponsorships will provide valuable resources for the Patriot Foundation which provides financial assistance to the families of wounded and fallen soldiers from the US Armed Forces. I ran this race because it offered a novel opportunity to log some supported miles in a fixed time format, a chance to run in a warm environment on the roads, and fit perfectly in the training progression towards this year’s Spartathlon ultramarathon in Greece later this fall. The conditions would be pretty close to what I would experience along the roads from Athens to Sparta. Plus, the venue offered beautiful scenery with the convenience of being close to home.
With respect to my running background, I rarely run fixed time events. But I have come to appreciate the opportunities they afford. The Tick Tock Race Director, Mary Marcia Brown, and her staff put on a quality event. Special thanks goes to Jackie Allred and the Red Hot Mamas for the game-day adoption and additional help out there. I enjoyed the scenery and tried to find something new to appreciate with each lap. The ultra community, in general, is ever ebullient and willing to lend a hand to all—this sentiment continued to hold true out there. The heat was a factor to all. Since the spring, I have layered up for the majority of my longer runs and this was the second opportunity I had to log miles in the least amount of clothing as possible.

Initially, I felt great! I felt so great that I neglect to govern the engine early on and had to eat a bit of humble pie with a milder pace the last half of the run. By the time the last hour rolled around, I was reminded by the burning sensation of my sun-kissed shoulders that I would need to re-apply sunscreen continuously in the future. Ultimately, my intent was to walk away from the event with another positive experience, meeting mileage goals, and continuing the prep to whip it on the for this year’s big Semper Fi Fund fundraiser event in alignment with Spartathlon.
